George Vander Sluis Oil on Canvas Diptych Paintings

American artist, George Vander Sluis, has received a Fulbright and Ford Foundation fellowships as well as multiple mural commissions for the New York State Council of the Arts. Vander Sluis' work is in many major collections and he designed two iconic postage stamps as well as murals for USPS in Colorado and Wyoming. These large abstract paintings are from the artist's estate. Vander Sluis shows a beautiful understanding of material and color through these paintings. He creates a strong sense of texture throughout the canvas, with rough sand like matter in the purple toned painting and hollows filled with a wash of color that make them almost unnoticeable with a quick glance on the other painting. His control of color in the purple painting features an analogous color scheme that brings a sense of serenity. Where in contrast the grey toned painting plays with contrasting colors that add bright pops cueing the eye to explore the entire canvas. Even with contrasting color techniques Vander Sluis locks this diptych together by mirroring the same circular shape.
