Description Born in Kazan, Russia into an aristocratic family on June 4, 1889. Gleb's father, a judge in the Kazan courts, encouraged his art studies at an early age. As was the Russian custom, both he and his brother Peter were given their father's first name as their middle names. In 1911 he graduated from the Kazan Government Art School after four years of art training under Nicolai Fechin and studied for six more years at the Imperial Academy of Art at St Petersburg under Repin and Makowsky. As members of the aristocracy, the Ilyins were forced to leave Russia due to the Revolution. Having painted portraits of several Japanese officers during WWI, letters of introduction were given to Gleb, making their move to Toyko an easy one. He stayed in Tokyo until 1923 and then joined his brother in San Francisco. In 1930 Gleb was brought to national attention with his portrait of Mrs. Herbert Hoover. He was a resident of Colorado for a short time in the mid-1940s. His last years were spent at his home on the Russian River in northern California. He died in San Francisco on Oct. 14, 1968.
