Description Biography from Montefiore Auction House
Jakob Steinhardt, the painter and woodcut artist, was born in Zerkow, Germany in 1887. In 1906 he studied at the School of Art in Berlin. In 1907 Steinhardt studied painting with Louis Corinth and engraving with Herman Struck. In 1908-10 he continued his advanced studies in Paris with Matisse and Steinlen and in 1911 in Italy. He taught in Bezalel, Jerusalem and was director from 1953-57. Steinhardt won international prizes for his wood-cuts from 1955-58 .
