Description A fine painting depicting a view of Venice.

Jean Baptist Tetar van Elven was born in 1805 in Amsterdam and passed away in Voorschoten in 1889. From 1819 to 1826 he received his training at the Academy of Arts in Antwerp and then 4 more years at the Academy in Brussels. In 1834 he was appointed as the Director of the Drawing Department of the Maatschappij tot Nut van het Algemeen in Amsterdam. He worked from ca. 1920 till his death in 1889. His teachers were Mattheus Ignatius van Bree, Willem Jacob Herreyns, Jozef Karel de Meulemeester and in Brussels he was taught by François Jos. He taught Johan Braakensiek, Elias Stark, Josef Eduard Tetar van Elven and Jan Simon Voddigel. Topics that he liked to painted were cityscapes, church interiors and history (as a genre) .
