Description Today we present an exceptional wildlife painting by Jessie Arms Botke, who is primarily remembered for her ornate depictions of exotic birds and tropical flowers. “African Grey Parrot” is an elegant and luminous work, skillfully and sensitively rendered by an artist who was proclaimed by critics during the height of her career to be the greatest decorative painter of the West. The subject's bright red tail feathers and the lush, vibrantly colored foliage combine with the application of gold-leaf to produce a sumptuous work that radiates light like an intricately detailed medieval illuminated manuscript.

Jessie Botke met and married artist Cornelis Botke in Chicago, and in 1929 they settled in Santa Paula, a rural area south of Santa Barbara, California. Their ten acre lot in Wheeler Canyon was called the Screaming Peacock Ranch, named for their marvelous collection of assorted multicolored birds. Jessie Botke was deeply inspired by these fascinating creatures as she faithfully captured the minute details and nuances of their playful, quirky movements and glamorous feathers. Botke's special interest in the African Grey Parrot is quite understandable, as they are highly intelligent, sociable creatures with striking cognitive abilities that are widely loved for their endearing displays of eccentric behaviors and entertaining sounds.
