Working in the continental school of still-life painting, this exquisite artwork depicts an overflowing basket of fruit and flowers, and was executed by the Belgian artist Joseph Panneel. It shows a simple yet rich and vibrant arrangement of flowers and fruit on a humble table top against a dimly light background, yet is painted by such superb vibrancy and rich warmth of tone and colour that it stands out for its boldness and high artistic quality.
It is signed and dated 'Jh Panneel. 1844' to the lower right, and is executed in oil-on-canvas, and set within a carved giltwood frame.
