    Here for your consideration is an early work by the American artist, Louis Joseph Endres. Signed lower left and dated 1924. Oil on artist board. This painting was done when Engres was a pupil in Paris at La Grande Chaumiere in 1924. The scene shows two figures enjoying a beautiful day picnicking along the river Rhone with the male figure playing a musical instrument. The fort in the rear right of the painting is Fort St-Andre in the commune of Villeneuve-les-Avignon. (See title verso). The fort dates to the first half of the 14th century. Overall size of painting framed in custom gold leaf frame 14.5 by 18.5 inches.

    Louis Engres was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1896 and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. In 1920 he won the Tiffany Award which brought his studies to Long Island, New York. He continued his studies in Paris in 1924 and in 1925 became the art professor at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He returned to Paris in 1928 and by 1931 he moved to Rebat and opened a studio. He is mainly known for his Arab figures and scenes. He died in 1989.
