Description Louis K Stone (1902 - 1984)

Born in Findlay, Ohio in 1902, Louis K Stone received his formal art training from many notable art institutes including the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Students League. Stone lived and painted in Europe before returning to New York in 1933. After a short period in Woodstock, New York, Stone travelled to Jacksonville, Florida and co-founded the Stone-Morris School of Fine Arts along with painter James S. Morris.

Stone settled in Lambertville, New Jersey in 1935. Lambertville is a town adjacent to the influential art hub New Hope, Pennsylvania. Stone soon became involved with the artistic and intellectual community in New Hope. Stone’s works from the mid-1930s to 1940s demonstrated a distinctive style combining the experimentation of European modernism with an unconventional use of flat colors. Stone’s works, described in his own words, aim to “to keep the colors alive”.
