Description Mary Abbott. Mary Abbott was one of the artists at the heart of the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York in the 1950s and '50s, but, like other women artists of the period, she received far less recognition than her male counterparts. Abbott painted bold, colorful works and traveled in the same circles as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and other artists who were redefining painting in the years after WWII. De Kooning, in particular, 17 years her senior, became a friend and lover. Abbott, who died very recently, was considered one of the last great Abstract Expressionist painters of her generation.

Abbott was included in a show at the Denver Art Museum several years ago that has sparked interest in and a reappraisal of the work Abbott, Perle Fine, Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Judith Godwin, Joan MItchell and others. She lived and worked for many years in East Hampton, NY.
