Miles Christopher Fairhurst was born at Thorpe, Norwich on 3 December 1955, third of the four children of artist and art dealer Joseph Fairhurst (4 July 1922-December 1993) and his wife Miss Perks, who married in 1947. Miles was educated at Gresham School, Holt, Norfolk and studied under his father and briefly in Aix-en-Provence, France but is mostly self-taught. Miles began his working life as an art dealer before turning to painting full time, being influenced by East Anglia and East Anglian artists such as Sir John Arnesby Brown and Edward Seago, light and mood predominate in his impressionist approach to the big skies and the scenes beneath. He shares their great love of the broad East Anglian skies and the ever-diminishing wild places that are such an inspiration and encourage his semi-impressionistic handling of the subject-a special favourite being sand dunes and beaches, quite often without the presence of human beings. In 1990, he moved to Turkey Hall, Metfield, near Halesworth, Suffolk and has held numerous one-man shows in the last few years and a strong following has grown for his work. A member of the Suffolk Coastal Group of artists and Norwich Art Circle, his work sells regularly through the major London sale rooms, and has many paintings in private collections in Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA and has exhibited far from his Suffolk home including at The Royal Society of Marine Artists’ annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London.
