Description This Orientalist painting by the eminent Danish painter Niels Simonsen depicts a family within an interior. Through an open arcade at left can be glimpsed distant mountains. The family—a father, mother, and son—play lovingly, the mother holding grapes out of the reach of her son. The interior is distinctly Islamic: the arcade features pointed arches and the door to the right is framed by a horseshoe arch. The distant landscape and the scene within the interior are idealised, granting the composition a peaceful character. The colour palette is bright, and the manner of execution is polished and fine.

Simonsen was an important Danish artist who worked in Munich and travelled in North Africa. The painting is signed ‘Simonsen’, dated ‘1842’, and located ‘Munich’. Simonsen’s works are held in important collections, such as the Royal Collection in Denmark. The work is held within a giltwood frame.
