Paulette Van Roekens was born in France and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She lived in Newport, Rhode Island from 1920 to 1923, the year she returned to Philadelphia and commenced a lengthy career as an instructor of drawing and painting in the life class at the Moore College of Art for Women. She married the artist Arthur Meltzer in 1927, and the couple often exhibited their works together. Van Roekens exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the National Academy of Design in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy, in addition to many other places. Van Roekens was an impressionist who was noted for her quickly painted, colorful landscapes, festive images of daily life, and still life subjects.
