Description A Chinese horizontal landscape scroll painting in ink and watercolor by the well-known late Qing imperial painter Zhou QiaoNian (1873-1932), whose signed his work with his literary name "The Mountain Hermit of Dragon Pond". The poetic landscape (Mountain and Water) depicts a lake surrounded by rocky peaks and trees and dotted with a few a hidden buildings of a residence and a pavilion.
At age 15 in 1888, Zhou entered the Qing court during the renovation of the Summer Palace to serve as a painter. After the renovation in 1895, he stayed on in the palace as a young imperial painter and and also as a teacher for the embroidery department until the end of the Qing dynasty in 1911.
This painting was inscribed with a poetry which translated as the following. "The house was built leaning against the peaks like the pillow, you have found such a sublime spot in the woods. The days pass by leisurely, and the hermit comes and go freely". On the January of 1901 (Chinese lunar calendar), I visited the owner of the Plum Blossom Residence. Painted in the Nine Dragon Mountains (located in nowadays ZheJiang providence). It was further signed with the artist's literal name and two seals. It is clear that this was a painting the artist presented as a gift to a friend he visited who owned a residence in the mountain retreat.
The scroll was professionally presented on a fabric canvas and presented in an acrylic shadow box.
