Description Lawrence Fine Art is pleased to present "Yellow Lilies," 2007, a beautiful, atmospheric work by Southampton-based painter Robert Harms.

Although abstractions, Harms' work is based on a strong relationship to place, particularly the pond abutting his secluded, window-filled studio in Southampton.

A critic for the NYT puts it this way:

I’ll admit that the thought of spending a year painting by a pond in Southampton fills me with jealousy; I can think of nothing better. But the reality of doing so is rather more difficult, for it demands not just a reliance on intense observation of nature but an extreme sensitivity to subtle, often fleeting atmospheric effects. This is an issue of artistic temperament as much as talent."

Harms joins a tradition of artists who have found in the East End of Long Island a special, atmospheric light (think Jane Wilson) and place (think De Kooning).

"(Harms' paintings) are suffused with the glimmery yellowness of East End light; it’s not quite yellow or white, but a color somewhere in between. Then there is the pleasing ribbon-like brushwork that has become something of a signature of Mr. Harms’s."

Harms work can be found in the collections of the Parrish Museum, Guild Hall and the Met.
