Description A modernist painter in a lyrical, expressive style, Philipp studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. He also spent nearly 10 years in Paris during the 1920s absorbing a variety of stylistic influences, including those, most particularly, of Renoir and Bonnard. He painted a wide variety of subjects, often using an unusual combination of colors, but he is best known for his portraits of his wife Rochelle who he married in 1934 and for his gay scenes of the theatre or cafe society. Philipp taught at the National Academy of Design and was elected a full Academician of NAD. His works are held by the Corcoran, the Whitney, the Met, and the High Museum-Atlanta, among others.
