Description Biography from the Archives of askART

My aunt, Ruth “Duster” Bortell, was a painter (born May 17, 1898-died October 8, 1976). She found in the 40’s and 50’s that people bought paintings from male artists rather than females, so she created the Roger Scott as her “nom de plume.” She specialized in small desert and mountain paintings.

She traveled extensively around the world, and her husband would barter her paintings for staying in the finest hotels. Her paintings used to hang in the Biltmore Hotels in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite Valley, the El Tovar in the Grand Canyon, the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone, the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, and other famous old hotels located in Chicago, New York, London, Paris, and Rome.

She also painted under her own name, signing as Duster Bortell.
