Description Roi Clarkson Colman is best remembered for his coastal and marine paintings such as this iconic serene scene set in beautiful La Jolla, California. He deftly captures a moment in time that combines the sparkling light on the surface of the impossibly blue water, the gently rolling waves, the tall, swaying eucalyptus trees and the dramatic cliffs.

He was born in Elgin, Illinois in 1884 and, showing promise at an early age, moved to Chicago at the age of 16 to study with L.H. Yarwood. He furthered his education in Paris at the Academies Julian and Grand Chaumiere and finally settled in Southern California around 1913, where he taught at the Santa Ana Academy.
