Set of four very large 18th century Italian Rococo paintings of the Four Seasons

$ 150,000
  • Description
    By an Italian artist active in Rome sometime during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, these beautiful paintings, exceptionally large in scale constitute a wonderful early example of Italian artists working in the Rococo style of painting, and depict the Four Seasons in allegorical form.

    Each work, executed in oil-on-canvas, is modelled as a set of four cherubs frolicking in landscape settings, similarly modelled with a large architectural element behind the central group in the foreground, with a rich atmospheric, sometimes brooding sky in the background. Winter can be discerned by the fire front and centre, and the axe propped up against a low wall besides fire wood; Spring by the floral garlands with which they deck and crown each other; Summer by the cherub lounging in the heat to the right and the winter wheat recently harvested; and Autumn by the grapes, wine, and Dionysiac costumes and lion in the centre.

    The paintings attest to the strong influence of the emerging Rococo style in Italian art, which originated in France from c.1730 onwards. These particular pieces are by an 18th century Italian working in the Roman school of painting and are important examples of Italians working in this style, a significance reflected in the quality and artistry of their execution. They come mounted in elegant giltwood frames.
