"Ashore the Sea of Peril" in the Water in Motion collection is an original painting by San Diego artist Shima Shanti in the medium of Encaustic. Encaustic, meaning "to burn in" is an ancient and alchemic art from originating in Greece and Egypt.
Layers, often up to fifty, of purified beeswax mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar resin are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then each layer fused to the layer beneath with the flame of a torch.
Shima holds a special reverence for the quality materials and unseen details in the complex and labor-intensive encaustic process that is a quiet whisper to the understated, refined luxury of her paintings. Her aesthetic is minimal. Combined with her choice of all natural elements in an earth-tone palette unexpected levels of complexity surface in this simplicity.
Her inspiration is borne from growing up in the abundance of water and the endless big sky of Montana. Shima paints vision of Peace revealing what lies beyond appearance free of the confines of perception. -
