"Looking for Self Out There" in the Lay of the Land Collection is an original encaustic painting by San Diego artist Shima Shanti. Inspired by the fleeting moment between time and space where one give way to the other. A meeting place of land and sea. Layers of purified beeswax mixed with earth pigments are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then each layer is fused with the flame of a torch. Shima's minimal aesthetic and choice of earth elements create patina and texture that are storied, translucent, and luminous. In this simplicity unexpected levels of complexity surface. Beeswax is one of nature's best preservative and is impervious to moisture, decay and UV light.
