Description Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1885, noted painter, etcher, illustrator and teacher Shirley Gordon Barrick studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He was a member of the Cleveland Society of Artists and the Art Director of the Cleveland Plain Dealer from 1918 until 1942. Barrick exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

A plein air painter, Barrick invented a mechanism called the “winter box” which would protect and warm an artist's hands while working outdoors in the landscape, even in bitterly cold conditions.
