Description Romantic-Barbizon painter Rousseau struggled against the prevailing artistic tradition of the time, and his works were initially rejected from the annual Paris Salon time-after-time. Later in his career, he would receive his due, all of his works would be exhibited and he received the French Legion of Honor. His works can be characterizes "as grave in manner, with an air of exquisite melancholy."
