Description
This commanding canvas hails from the easel of Kentucky-born painter William Edward West (1788-1857), one of the most heralded American artists of the early nineteenth century. It is one of two nearly identical works—the other now lost—and ranks among the best-documented works from his easel, and one of the few to be engraved during his lifetime. The now-lost earlier version was exhibited and initially published as a print in Britain, to great fanfare. This second version attracted a national audience when exhibited in 1849 at the American Art Union in New York, and was selected as a prize in their Annual Lottery. The quality of West’s work established for him an international reputation as an “icon” of American culture in the antebellum era.
