Description This unsigned, stock photo was included in a superbly edited exhibition in the Vienna Ethnological Museum in 2010. On special occasions, the clothes displayed in this photo, are the "uniform of relatives" (Aso Ebi). They are worn at social gatherings such as funerals, ceremonies or openings and consist of identical embroidery fabrics. The exhibition tells the story of a product that has contributed significantly to the political self-image of the Nigerians after independence. However, it was not always uncontroversial: in the years of the oil Boom, the garments in brightly colored colors and sometimes decorated with Rolls-Royce or Peugeot logos were seen as a visible sign of material prosperity - after all, the robes are and were anything but cheap. At the end of the 1970s, when there was a return to national cultural values, the Vorarlberg imports were also targeted by the traditionalists - the politicians finally even imposed an import ban. This did not change much in the popularity of the embroidery: it was imported via the neighboring country of Benin, to the benefit of the local economy. Nigeria became the most important trading partner for the Vorarlberg embroidery companies; to date, around 50 percent of the products produced go to the country on Africa's west coast. Without the Nigerian robes, which play an extremely important role in the country's national culture, the Lustenau embroidery industry would probably no longer exist today.
