Description
$3,750.00 each, framed
Basilius Besler (1561-1629) was a German botanist who is best known for the 'Hortus Eystettensis" (1613), a folio of large engravings documenting the plants and flowers of the celebrated garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, Prince Bishop of Eischtatt, in Bavaria. The work took sixteen years to complete and ten engravers were engaged in producing the illustrations, which depicted species from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The garden itself was destroyed by invading Swedish troops in 1633; however, it has recently been reconstructed and was opened to the public in 1998.
