Sold Sold
  • Description
This fine Japanese color wood block print, depicting poppies on a dark ground, is by Ohara Shoson, one of the leading artists of the Showa period. Shoson (1877-1945) was a highly recognized painter and printmaker, who also went by the names Koson and Hoson. He studied with Suzuki Koson, and became a leading Nihonga painter in Kacho-ga genre of naturalistic prints. His work in the wood block medium became very popular, printed by Kawaguchi and Watanabe. In the 1930s, his prints were shown in America by the Toledo Museum to much acclaim, and examples of his work are now in the collections of the Cincinnati, Honolulu, Minneapolis, Newark and San Francisco museums.
