Down Mariposa

  • Description
Today we are fortunate to be able to offer a rare Artist Proof by one of the San Francisco Bay Area's leading Modernists, Wayne Thiebaud, who passed away on Christmas Day in 2021, ending his long, successful, and very influential career.

This important etching is a cityscape created by the intaglio printmaking process in which lines or areas are incised using acid into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. This work is numbered in graphite lower left “A/P 7”, one of only 10 Artist Proofs in the limited edition that also includes 50 numbered prints. It is signed and dated in graphite lower right “Thiebaud 1979” and his signature is preceded by the tiny hand drawn heart that he often included.

The title, “Down Mariposa”, refers to the street in San Francisco in the Potrero Hill neighborhood that includes this outrageously steep vertical drop. The automobiles in the background that head down the street toward us seem to hang precariously as they navigate the path down a dizzying, impossible downward slope that would cause even the most courageous driver to feel a bit concerned for their safety. These daring elements in the composition make us feel the palpable thrill and excitement of navigating the world famous hills of the City by the Bay and evoke a strong sense of tension and drama.

This work contains strong vertical, horizontal and diagonal elements formed by the buildings, telephone poles, power lines and roads that create a wonderfully interesting variety of geometric shapes and divide the composition into distinct sections. These triangles, circles, and squares are reminiscent of the artist's well-known fascination with the shapes that he explored throughout his career in his distinctive paintings of slices of pie and colorful cakes.
