Growing up in Italy, Clemente Spampinato was schooled in the classical arts but developed a love of sports as well. The two came together in the trophies and medallions he was commissioned to sculpt in the 1930s and '40s.

In 1946, Spampinato moved to the United States, became a United State citizen and learned to love the American West. His "Basketball Players" was in a 1968 one-man exhibition, "Sport and Western Sculpture," in the National Art Museum of Sports' gallery at Madison Square Garden. Thirteen different sports were represented. The Western bronzes included rodeo events as well as historical scenes.

Spampinato's work is admired for his ability to bring to life the complex movements of sport while maintaining a strong sense of realism. His aim was to capture the moment of action when the human body is at the point of greatest height, speed, and dynamism. These attributes are well illustrated in his bronze "Basketball Players" in the National Art Museum of Sport.
