The Pioneer

  • Description
This is a maquette, a scale model in a smaller size, of the famous seven foot tall statue “The Pioneer” that stands in a small park in the center of the swanky Carthay Circle in Los Angeles. The former Carthay Circle Theater, one of the most famous movie houses of Hollywood's Golden Age stood nearby. The statue/monument honors the California Pioneers of the Gold Rush of 1849, and specifically represents a man named Daniel O. McCarthy, known colloquially as “Dan the Miner”. “Dan” has been panning for gold in that spot for nearly a century, with the exception of a brief period in 2008, when the original statue was stolen and later found at a metal scrapyard. The work was restored and reinstalled in Cathay Circle in 2009. The neighborhood is named for Daniel O. McCarthy, and was developed by his son, John Harvey McCarthy.

This maquette and the life size statue were created by sculptor Henry Lion in 1924-25 and the monument, that originally included an elaborate fountain, was dedicated in 1927. This smaller scale model is inscribed with the artist's signature and the date “Henry Lion 1925” and the words “Pioneer, Carthay Circle L.A. CAL” on the base. Lion produced much of the early 20th century bronze statuary in Los Angeles, including two other sculptures in Carthay Circle as well as Felipe de Neve at the Los Angeles Plaza.
