Creation Date 1780
Description A rare pair of very finely modeled terra cotta plaques set in period frames in the manner of Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo (1743-1820). Each rectangular work contains allegories of the Arts. One bears a central painter's palette, book, oboe, and branches of roses. The other contains a central tambourine, triangle, grape vines, a recorder, and the Thrysus, a staff topped by a pinecone, an attribute of the Greek god Dionysos. The fired clay which is highlighted with gilt detail, is contained within frames of gilt gesso and wood. Italy, c. 1780.
