  • Description
French Fine Art Bronze • circa 1923
Signature "Guino" & "1ie Epreuve sur 25" to base
    Colin foundry stamp
Two identical versions of this bronze are known, no’s 1 and 2*. The model was sold to the Manufacture Nationale de Sevres and it was exhibited in the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs in bisque porcelain. Therefore it is unlikely that further versions were produced in bronze after this agreement.
The Classic that this bronze is inspired by, is that of Bathing Aphrodite and Eros
from the Greek (3rd Century BC) epic. A Roman sculpture after the Greek original is in the The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The style of this bronze is reminiscent of Renoir for good reason. Guino, Maillol's favored student, was recommended to Pierre-Auguste Renoir by Ambroise Vollard to help turn some of his imagery into three dimensions. Guino lived with Renoir for four years producing the bronzes so sought after today. For further reading and information on this art world secret and skulduggery see article link.
