Artist Biography
Lockwood de Forest was a key figure of the American Aesthetic Movement who, as the designer, introduced the East Indian Craft revival to America during the Gilded Age. At the young age of nineteen he underwent formal training as an artist in Rome at the Corridi school. He also took the lessons of the Hudson River school and applied them to his own work, creating a looser landscape 'sketch'. As well as being a painter de Forest was a designer and became partner of the design firm Associated Artists where he directed the production of architectural woodwork. While working as a designer he continued painting and he exhibited his work frequently at the Century Association and the National Academy of Design.
