Description Andrew Newell Wyeth (1917 - 2009)

Andrew Wyeth is one of the most famous 20th Century American painters. His figurative and landscape paintings are both realistic and stylistic. Wyeth primarily works in watercolor and tempera and is a master of the drybrush technique. Wyeth was home schooled due to his ill health. His art education mainly came from his father, the famous illustrator N.C. Wyeth.

Wyeth’s painting style maintained a strong sense of realism while the art world was largely dominated by Abstract Expressionism. However, his works did demonstrate certain characters of abstraction. His subjects often appear in unusual juxtapositions highlighting a slightly exaggerated emotional state. Wyeth’s works often depict isolation, quietness, rural scenes and gloomy mood. There’s often an absence of modern day objects in Wyeth’s paintings.
