His works focused on depicting the everyday life of the lower-class in New York. Shinn was also extremely attracted to the glamour of theater. Besides his realistic subjects, Shinn created many art works celebrating the spectacle.

Shinn grew up in Woodstown, New Jersey and had training in industrial design and engineering. Shinn traveled extensively and also worked in film and theater. He was also the cartoonist and illustrator for 94 magazine stories and 28 books. Shinn was elected an academician of the National Academy in 1949.
