Design for a Garden

$ 18,000
  • Description
    Giuseppe Tonelli is known as a painter of perspectives, architect of “illusions,” theater décors, and designer of gardens. Tonelli was the pupil of Jacopo Chiavistelli (a painter of perspectives and architectural subjects), and worked primarily in Bologna and Rome. Tonelli dedicated himself particularly to architectural decorations in painted fresco including the ceilings in the second and third corridors of the Uffizi and the ceiling of many churches in Florence. The Uffizi has several drawings of his and The Gallery of Parma has twelve head of saints. The church of San Egidio in part of Santa Maria Nuova, the most famous hospital in Florence, had its ceiling decorated in cooperation with Tonelli, who planned the architecture with Matteo Bonnechi who added the figures in the early 18th century. He also did the trômpe l’oeil architecture for the summer apartments of the Grand Principe Ferdinando de’ Medici, his patron.
    This sketch was undoubtedly a sketch proposal for a garden design for the Grand Duke Ferdinand.
