Description
Bertin was very well known during the Empire and Restoration periods for his landscapes. Early in his career he had been strongly influenced by Poussin; this influence is still visible in the strong geometry of the present drawing. The artist has, however, softened Poussin's structure with a naturalistic feeling in the rendering of the vegetation. His style is rooted in the Neoclassical tradition, but Bertin was an early adopter of plein air painting, or the practice of sketching or painting outdoors. He encouraged the practice to his students, and it eventually became a cornerstone of the Impressionist style. One of Bertin’s most famous students was Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot.
Bertin is known to have traveled to Greece, Italy, and Egypt where he drew the local landscape. He probably was in Italy between 1806 and 1808, the date many of his Italian views were executed. Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli was a favorite subject for foreign artists traveling to Rome. - More Information
