  • Description
An exceptional 13 x 10in (33 x 24cm) ink and watercolour on paper by Leon Bakst of a semi-nude dancer from Schéhérazade ballet, signed and dated 1910.

Léon Bakst’s (1866-1924) fame lay in the lavish sets and costumes he designed for the Diaghilev Ballets Russes and huge pageant spectaculars for dancer and patron Ida Rubinstein. Schéhérazade, first performed by the Ballet Russes in Paris in 1910, was the first of Bakst’s international triumphs as a costume and set designer.

Provenance: Given by the artist to the previous vendor’s grandmother, Soviet writer and activist Marietta Shaginian.

Documentation (in Russian and attached): Scientific analysis by an art laboratory in Kiev, 2018. Based on pigment and paper analysis the study confirmed an age between the end of the 19th century and 1st half of the 20th century consistent with the 1910 date.
