Description Anyone who has seen the recent "John Singer Sargent Watercolors" exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum or the Boston Museum of Fine Arts will appreciate the mastery of Walter's watercolors, composed on her travels to Italy, Spain and North Africa, most of them from her estate and mostly unseen until now.

Walter, one of America's most distinguished female painters, was a prized student of William Merritt Chase and is primarily noted for her light-hearted and colorful beach scenes. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art with Chase. She won a Cresson traveling scholarship in 1908 and from that point spent many years studying, painting and traveling in Europe and North Africa. These works likely date to after 1915 when she begun to concentrate more on hue and color and her figures became more "elusive."

She was represented for many years by Milch Gallery in NYC. Her work is in the permanent collections of the PAFA, Musee de Luxenbourg, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Detroit Institute of Arts, among others.
