Mechanical Bank "Lion and Two Monkeys" circa 1883
-
Description
"Lion and Two Monkeys" cast iron mechanical bank was manufactured in 1883 by the Kyser and Rex Company in Frankford, Pennsylvania.
This particular example is all original with no repairs and no repaint. This is especially significant since this bank is, more often than not, found with a replaced baby monkey. This variation with the single peanut shaped knot on the tree is the more rare of the two variations (the other being a tree with two peanut shaped knots).
The bank measures 9-1/16" long x 8-1/2" high.
It operates as follows:
place a penny on the right hand of the bottom monkey on the tray provided;
press down on the lever behind and at the base of the tree. The baby monkey pops up to watch as the bottom monkey drops her arm, and the penny slides into the waiting lion's mouth which opens simultaneously. -
