Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti were a duo of French designers who were known for their imaginative decorative art and furniture designs. Their unique style paired romantic, surreal, and avant-garde aesthetics to create wholly original versions of everyday objects such as candle holders, armoirs, and chairs. “Our hope is to give people the feeling of freedom in the choice of forms,” Garouste and Bonetti stated in reference to their eclectic style. “Good taste really bothers us a lot. What we care about is implanting doubt. We don’t have any rules.” Garouste was born on July 17, 1946 in Paris, France and Bonetti in 1952 in Lugano, Switzerland, they partnered in the late 1970s after meeting in Paris. The artists gained global recognition for their interior design of the Paris nightclub Le Palace, and began receiving commissions from the city’s elite thereafter. In 1991, the pair was named Designers of the Year at the International Furniture Fair. Garouste and Bonetti ended their collaboration in 2001 and continue to work independently, exhibiting in New York, Paris, and Munich. Today, Graouste and Bonetti's work can be found in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée des arts décoratifs et du design de Bordeaux, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, among others.
