    In Japan, gardeners train their gourds and squashes up an arbor to create a perfect gourd shape. Gourds were used for containers and the more perfect the shape the more desirable the container. Mid Edo period (1614 - 1868) Rimpa school painting with gold leaf gourds and mineral pigments on oxidized silver leaf ground. Interesting mottled effect on the silver leafground. Has a silk brocade border.
