Description A stunning rare 19th century Zanzibar or Bombay chest composed of six thick slabs of teak wood. The exterior of the trunk is outfitted with brass sheets and studs in geometric patterns, particularly pyramidal shapes mounted by crosses, representing the Fountain of Youth. This chest's design is particularly restrained and elegant having a lace-like effect. The height and plate surface of the top make for an excellent coffee table. These dowry chests were often used in the export of spices, rugs, and silks to the West in the 18th and 19th centuries, East Africa, 1870.
