  • Description
A mid-18th century Chippendale period king wood, rose wood, and purple heart parquetry secrétaire bookcase has a cavetto moulded blind fret carved cornice above a pair of astragal glazed mirrored doors. It retains the original mirror plates and encloses three adjustable shelves. The lower part has a rectangular top with finely gadrooned moulding above a secrétaire drawer with seven drawers and a baize lined writing surface. Below are four, long, graduated drawers with ornate brass swan neck handles and a Greek key. A stiff leaf carved mouldings base ends in shaped bracket feet.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Note: This secrétaire bookcase is made of highly exotic timbers, and the use of mirror plates within the astragal glazed doors is extremely rare. The design is distinctly Chinese in character and inspired by Thomas Chippendale’s first edition of ‘The Gentleman and Cabinetmaker’s Director’, published in 1754. Over the years this charming piece has acquired a beautiful honey-coloured patination.
