Empire Commode or Chest of Three Drawers with Caryatids South Germany circa 1815

$ 6,500
  • Description
    Very fine, original, refinished neoclassicist empire commode or chest of three drawers with caryatids. From south Germany, circa 1810-1815.

    Wood: Wonderful, bright and friendly cherry veneer and solid wood, book-matched and running over the front side. Shellac hand polished and partly ebonized on the edges and feet.
    Beautiful original brass caryatids, gold colored heads and feet and ebonized pilaster body. Brass key tags, 1 original, 2 cast. Motif depicts two mermaids facing each other.

    This commode dates back to the second neoclassicist period, so called Empire. In this time, where Napoleon reigned over Europe, ancient motifs brought back from Napoleons expeditions to Egypt were popular and used on the best furniture at that time.
