English Edwardian Mahogany Fall-Front Secretary Desk with Built-In Safe c. 1900

With a smooth operating action, this remarkably high quality Edwardian period mahogany writing desk features a built-in Chubbs safe in the lower cabinet. The top and fall front act together using a hinged action, allowing the desk to open into an expanded writing area while the top raises ninety-degrees to allow unfettered access to the orderly interior. Here a set of four pigeon-hole slots are surrounded by various terraced paper slots with scalloped edges that beautifully mirror the curvature of the pigeon-hole valences.

The lowest slots on either side are designed to be pushed up so that a tiny hidden drawer on either side is revealed.

Before the ink blotter writing surface is an original ink well set with sterling silver components embellishing solid onyx. On either side of the case a small drawer slides in and out with crisp hand-cut dovetails.

The lower doors open to reveal the white-enamel Chubbs safe and an open cabinet on the left. The safe remains fully operational with original keys for this as well as the rest of the desk.

Unusual in quality, form and originality. This is a fine and highly practical piece that conveniently allows for letter writing, bill organization and storage of papers that require safe keeping.

Condition Report:
Gap in lid from shrinkage between top and closed fall front; shrinkage gap in ovular molding on fall front; color variation to the mahogany throughout - would benefit from being professionally recolored. Brass handle on left side of cabinet replaced, all other hardware original. Trace oxidization and rust to steel components/hinges; tarnish to silver hardware components. Minor surface scuffs and other small repairs; electrical cord cut at the back, the electrical element non-functioning.
