English George III Chest of Unusual Form in Historic Paint, circa 1780
-
Description
Wonderful, rare circa 1780 English George III painted chest of unusual 'tall' and 'deep' form, the pine case and four graduated drawers in 'historic' paint layers and original hardware configuration on bracket-foot base. This piece is very interesting and attractive visually, but also notable for its juxtaposing 'high and low' attributes. The overall form of this chest, while unique in dimensions, is archetypal of a 'formal' chest of the period customarily constructed of an expensive tropical hardwood such as mahogany, having the typical 'fine' cabinet-maker traits of an ogee-edge top, cockbead-edge drawers, two-post bail-pull hardware arrangement, and shaped bracket-foot base; that this chest bears these traits, but of native pine construction, is curious and noteworthy. The drawer construction however is pinned, typical of nonprofessional or apprentice work and befitting its construction material, as opposed to a 'fine' dovetail, and the keyhole escutcheons are blind, one drawer having a 'dummy' lock and the others partially carved for locks never installed. Given this knowledge; in addition to its unusual form and historic paint-wear, one could presume it to have been built by an apprentice for use in the cabinetmaker's shop, possibly for storing designs or drawings, hardware, parts, tools, or veneers; a 'filing cabinet' of it's day. An exceptional piece.
