Description This fall-front secretary bookcase was probably hand made by a very skilled cabinetmaker in either Virginia or Maryland. It is made of French polished mahogany and mahogany veneer with ebony and holly checkerboard inlay and poplar secondary wood. The 16 panes of glass appear to be hand blown originals. The very unusual finials are hand made brass as are the hinges and locks, all also original. The solid brass pulls are old replacements. The bookcase desk has three small drawers over 3 large drawers. The writing surface is felt replaced about 30 years ago. The secretary has a shaped skirt with French feet and a line of checkerboard inlay above the skirt. The piece comes into 2 sections for easier moving.
