Description | Baltimore, Maryland Circa 1800 Primary Wood: Mahogany Secondary Woods: White Pine, Tulip Poplar, Cedar Reference: Please see the sideboard with a similar shallow center section and a serpentine skirt in Furniture in Maryland 1740-1940, The Collection of The Maryland Historical Society, page 155, number 116. This simple example was probably copied from a prototype in a more urban area like Baltimore. Also see the sideboard with the serpentine skirt in Baltimore Furniture: The Work of Baltimore and Annapolis Cabinetmakers from 1760-1810, number 45, page 80-81. The use of veneered oval panels edged by chevron stringing and set into mitered and veneered drawer fronts is consistent with sophisticated cabinetmaking practices in Baltimore Federal furniture. |
