'Meuble Soleil', gilt bronze mounted marquetry commode by Linke and Alix

$ 600,000
  • Description
    This exceptional commode was crafted by the famous ébéniste, Francois Linke (French, 1855-1946). To create this piece, Linke worked to a design by the furniture-maker Georges-François Alix (1846-1906), which was itself based on an 18th-Century model of a commode by the prestigious cabinetmaker, Jean-Henri Riesener (German, 1734-1806). Linke purchased Alix’s design—which he called the ‘Meuble Soleil’ (French: ‘sun cabinet’)—in the early 20th Century. Linke then altered and expertly executed it to create this magnificent piece of furniture. He created four versions of this commode, one in 1910, one in 1912, 1926 and 1939. This commode dates from one of the first two dates, making it an early model. It is remarkable for the quality of its design and craftsmanship.

    The commode is composed of a bow-fronted body which stands on four ormolu (gilt bronze) paw feet on bases. The body of the commode features a central marquetry panel which depicts a low sun, its rays falling upon an avenue of trees. Before it, there is a marquetry balustrade, which is centred on an ormolu flower urn and flanked by a pair of ormolu scrolls, topped by scallop shells. On either side of the central panel, there are pairs of open shelves which are covered with variegated white marble. The shelves are positioned before diamond-patterned parquetry backdrops and are fronted with pierced ormolu galleries. The upper body of the commode features three lockable drawers—one larger central drawer and two smaller, curved flanking drawers. These are decorated with ormolu rinceau bands, composed of Grotesque masks, flanked by stylised vines which are dotted with sunflowers and bellflowers and terminate in cockerel heads. The drawers are separated from one another by ormolu scrolls which are draped with tasselled fabrics. The commode is topped with variegated white, blue, brown and grey marble.

    ‘F. Linke’ is signed onto the lower right of the commode and the lock-plates are stamped ‘CT LINKE/ SERRURERIE/ PARIS/ 1605.’
