French 19th Century Inlay Secrétaire à Abattant

Sold Sold
  • Description
Inlaid details grace many of this 19th century French secretary’s surfaces. Both the exterior doors and drawers are trimmed in satinwood and mahogany, done in a twist-motif. The interior drawer fronts have satinwood inlay, laid into the wood in straight lines that form a perimeter around each. Book-matched mahogany veneer meets strategically, creating mesmerizing geometric patterns in the mahogany’s grain. A piece of white marble sits atop the desk. Like the body below, the marble top has canted corners. Those found on the body have carved, fluted details that continue down the corners to the triangular shaped feet. The top drawer contains a working lock, with a keyhole that can be obscured with a brass slide. The front of the desk folds down to reveal an interior outfitted with six smaller drawers, a pigeon hole and space for organizing. With the front laid down, its backing becomes the work surface. It has been topped in a burgundy colored leather. Below this is another cavity that can be locked to secure its contents.
